Every other Tuesday at 7pm the LAVA Library hosts a free evening of
feminist films. Come on out and spread the word!

This week:
The King of Masks (1996)
THE MAVERICK risk-taker who made the Xian Film Studio
"cradle of the new Chinese cinema" is finally achieving international
recognition in his own right as director of a spellbinding tale about an
elderly street magician and the pint-sized heir to his secrets.
Wu Tianming's "King of Masks," spins the story of old Wang, a lonely
street performer who despairs of adopting a grandson to call his own and
learn his trade. Tradition insists that the art can only be passed on to a
boy. When Wang finally finds a child, "Doggie," who begs to go with him,
he is overjoyed. "Doggie" is a quick learner, but also shrewd enough to
act like a boy - until nature betrays her. Wang's skills are admired by an
elegant young actor named Master Liang, who plays women in Chinese opera.
All three are part of the world of the outcast, a central theme of the
film.

August 19th:
Housekeeping (1988)
An adaptation of Marilynne Robinson's brilliant novel about a two orphaned
sisters and their vagabond aunt. Roger Ebert says, "In a land where the
people are narrow and suspicious, where do they draw the line between
madness and sweetness? Between those who are unable to conform to
society's norm and those who simply choose not to, because their dreamy
private world is more alluring? That is one of the many questions asked,
and not exactly answered, in Bill Forsyth's "Housekeeping," which is one
of the strangest and best films of the year."
