LAVA Library Notes for Thursday, February 22nd 2007!

In attendance: Cynthia, Dave, Steven

March Staffing:

We will be closed on the 18th, 21st, and 25th due to the floors being redone.
So, here is what we have thus far

Librarything.com:

Cynthia is interested in helping the cataloguing effort by means of a new internet database called librarything.com.  She is well versed in the ways of librarianship as she holds a technical organizing position with palinet.com.

She has a friend who may be able to donate their computer so we can use that solely for organizational purposes.  She will pick that up for us when she works out the details.

As for librarything.com, it is a way to catalogue your books by title, author, date, tags, and rating.  You can do this by simply typing in the ISBN and it is self explanatory from there.  It is even possible to purchase a bar code scanner for $20 to expedite the process.  

The books are then made searchable on the entire website to make it easier to share books with others who have compiled their own catalogue.  You can even search the Library of Congress and over 70 other public libraries.

We have already set up a free account, which is capable of holding the information for 200 books.  If you care to check it out go to librarything.com and type in the username lava, and the password library.

Outreach:

Dave is going to design the bookmark and send it to Steven.  Steven will then talk with George at CSP (Lancaster and Spring Garden) about discounted (maybe free) production!

Event:

There is a LAVA-wide event happening on May 12th, tentatively.  This will be a time for all the groups under LAVA’s roof to come together and do what we do best. What ideas do you have?  Some suggestions include having a reading group, forum, or presentation on autonomous spaces.  We can have a book sale, or a book reading.  Lend us your ideas.

Workday:

We decided to have our next workday on Sunday March 11th.
Things to do that day include:
Priming the shelves in preparation for the Graffiti Crew.
Organize lot of new video donations.

In the meantime, not necessarily the workday, Kat will be organizing the zines.  She wouldn’t mind help, so give her a call if you have some free time.

Kat is writing one up; let’s have some discussion on this once she shares it with us!
